Protecting Your Prostate

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 31st, 2009 and filed under prostate symptoms | 4 Comments »

Did you know that prostate cancer is the greatest killer of men in industrialized nations? The sad truth is 90% of men develop some type of prostate problem by the age of 60.

Yet many have a cavalier attitude to prostate health. They think it can’t happen to them and they dismiss the warning signs and symptoms as a nuisance which will go away. Sadly, unless treated, they won’t go away.

So what are the warning signs of potential prostate problems, what tests can you have and what can you do to protect your prostate?

WHAT IS THE PROSTATE?

Both a sex gland and a muscle, your prostate is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Its lobes wrap around tubing, called the urethra, which carries urine out through the penis. In a young man the prostate is walnut sized. Later in life it typically grows larger.

One of its main jobs is to produce secretions that eventually nourish sperm. Its other function is as a muscle involved in the process of ejaculation.

As a man ages, the gland can increase in size over time and press against the urethra to the extent that his ability to urinate and empty the bladder can be affected. This effect is known as BPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF BPH?

The most common signs are nocturnia [getting up several times a night to urinate], weak urine stream and a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder. A man can also suffer from dribbling before and after urination, frequent daytime urination and increased urgency.

WHAT TESTS CAN YOU HAVE?

There are 2 main tests that you can have.

The first is a Digital Rectal Exam or DRE.

During the exam, your doctor places his gloved index finger into your rectum to evaluate the condition of your prostate. While many men dread this procedure, a DRE is a must for any man at risk for prostate problems and should be performed during an annual physical exam for men over 40. I am aged 68 and have this test as a part of my annual physical check up.

You may feel uncomfortable the first time but it is a very simple procedure, taking only seconds. My message is: Your health is at stake here so get over it and have the test!

A general enlargement might indicate BPH. Some enlargement plus bumps or sponginess is often a sign of prostatitis. This is an infection and inflammation of the prostate which can show up in the form urinary complaints, burning, itching and unusual discharge from the penis.

A rock hard prostate can indicate cancer. If any irregularities are found, your doctor usually calls for more tests.

A healthy prostate will not feel painful when pressed on. This test can detect disease early and spare you from illness, debility and more unpleasant medical procedures.

The second test is a Prostate Specific Antigen [PSA] blood test.

PSA is a protein that is present in blood samples and it is thought to be produced in the prostate. PSA numbers seem to rise when infection and inflammation are present in the prostate gland. As with DRE, all men should have their first test at age 40 and then annually beginning at age 45.

The PSA test has been quite controversial, because results are not always consistent with the absence or presence of prostate problems.
A reading of 4.0 or below is considered safe. Above that figure is not a good sign and a score of 10.0 or higher is considered dangerous. A possible indication of cancer beyond the prostate. These figures can change each year, so don’t be complacent if your score is 4.0 or below at present. Continue to have your annual test.

When you have your annual PSA test, it is a good idea to ask your doctor to check your blood ALBUMIN level. This is recommended by Dr Larry Clapp, author of “Prostate Health in 90 Days without Drugs or Surgery.” Albumin protects tissues from free radical damage [cellular damage that can progress to cancer]. Healthy people tend to have high albumin levels. When you are sick and your immune system is under stress, your albumin level usually drops.

Never start a new treatment before consulting your doctor, especially if you are currently taking medication. The 3 Forms Of Skin Cancer And Hints On Preventing Their Occurrence

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 31st, 2009 and filed under prostate cancer treatments | No Comments »

Skin cancer is the fastest growing type of cancer in the United States. 1 out of 3 new cancers is skin related. Excessive sun exposure is the leading cause of skin cancers. The skin tumor normally develops in the epidermis making it visible to the naked eye, which can make the disease easier to diagnose. When treatments start at an early stage, there is a high probability of containing the cancer and curing it completely. Over close to 90% of skin cancer patients make it past the 5 year survival mark.

There are 3 types of skin cancers. The most common form of skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. Many different factors can come into play when discussing who is at risk for this form of the disease. Frequent or excessive sun exposure is far and away the biggest reason people develop this skin disease. These cancers develop in the basal layer of the skin and although the cancer does not normally spread to other organs, it can continue to grow locally if not treated properly. The skin pain associated with this form of tumor is initially non-existent what can be a bad thing because it can delay detection.

The second most common form of skin cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These are not limited to the skin and can occur anywhere from the mouth to the prostate. These carcinomas only make up about a fifth of new cancer cases but are considered much more dangerous because of their ability to spread easily. Squamous cell carcinomas are mostly characterized by a large, red mark that takes the appearance of an open sore over time. They are quite dangerous and should be removed only through surgery or other medically appropriate procedures.

Melanomas are the third and most dangerous form of skin cancer. A large majority of skin cancer related deaths are due to this stage cancer. Most melanomas start off looking like moles. It is essential that if you have a new mole on your body that you get it checked by a doctor. What looks like a simple mole could turn out to be a cancerous growth. The reason its imperative to get any growth checked out is that nearly all skin cancers are 100% curable if found early. Like all other forms of skin cancer, skin type and sun exposure are the biggest factors in determining risk.

Treatment of skin cancers can range from digging out the diseased cells to chemotherapy. Some of the side effects of treatment can range from nausea to hair loss due to chemotherapy. Consult your oncologist with any questions or issues regarding side effects. Alternative medicine options and questions should only be discussed with a certified health care professional.

Use of artificial tanning beds has been shown to be a high risk activity in regards to skin cancers. High concentrated amounts of UV light may give your skin a little color but can cause exponentially more damage in the long run. Is a 1 week tan really worth the risk? People who make their home near the equator need to take extra care since studies show they are more likely to develop skin related issues than peoples living near the poles. Many steps can be taken to avoid skin cancer so do not fret.

A sun screen of at least 30 SPF applied generously every 2 hours will greatly reduce your risk of cancerous growths. Take a few minutes every few weeks so well to give yourself a self examination. Catching something in the early stages can mean the difference between life and death. Hats and long sleeve shirts are your friends during sunny days. It may be uncomfortable to be covered up during hot, sunny days but one needs to think in the future when talking about skin cancers. Just one deep burn can cause you problems down the road.

The sun is a dangerous thing. We need to be aware of the risks associated with excessive exposure in order to protect ourselves. Skin cancer is a common affliction affecting millions of Americans. A few small steps and a little knowledge about the symptoms and treatments can save many lives. Pay attention to any new growth or skin lesion that could be a precancerous signal on the body, do a little more research on the internet about actinic keratosis and contact a health care professional if anything appears. Time is of the essence.

Prostate Cancer Surgery Treatment: Knowing Your Options

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 29th, 2009 and filed under prostate symptoms | No Comments »

In many cases, early stage prostate cancer surgery treatment is recommended as the first course of action. If you had detected your prostate cancer early, then the operation is a fairly simple procedure. Only the cancerous section of your prostate gland is removed.

However, on ocassions, prostate cancer surgery treatment does not go according to plan. This happens when your cancer is found to be in close proximity to nerves or the urethra, and so long-lasting side effects are a possibility. You will need to consider these issues before agreeing to the treatment.

If the nerves that control the penis become damaged during your treatment, then impotence may develop and this will seriously affect your future sex life. You should discuss this with your partner and see how you both feel about it before you agree to the operation.

Two other possible consequences of prostate cancer surgery treatment are incontinence and urinary leakage. Incontinence is when you have very little control over urination while urinary leakage is where you can control when you urinate but you dribble a little either before or after voiding your bladder. These two symptoms often disappear after a few weeks however you should be prepared for the eventuality that they do not.

Prostate cancer surgery treatment is a painful procedure and in the days following the operation you will feel very uncomfortable and may have to rely on nurses and loved ones to help with toileting. This however is a very small price to pay for being cancer-free.

There are a number of types of treatment for prostate cancer available and the one you choose will be specific to your case. You need to discuss your options with your oncologist before choosing a treatment. Your oncologist should be well equipped to offer all the information you need to make an informed decision.

More often than not the entire prostate gland will be removed so that there is little chance of the cancer returning at a later date. The surrounding lymph nodes will also be removed as this is the first place that the cancer will have spread to and by removing them the surgeon is effectively removing all chances of the cancer subsequently spreading around the body.

A radical prostatectomy removes the entire prostate gland however the surgeon can enter the body through the abdomen or through an incision made between the scrotum and the anus. In some cases, where the cancer is confined to a specific area of the prostate gland, key-hole surgery or laparoscopy may be an option so that only infected sections of the gland need to be removed.

Your decision on the specific prostate cancer surgery treatment will depend on the extent of your cancer and your individual preferences. It is crucial that you discuss your decision over with your loved ones. They may have some inputs that can help you choose which option is best.

Discoveries About Antibodies Provide Hope For Cancer Prevention

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 29th, 2009 and filed under prostate cancer treatments | No Comments »

Dedication and perseverance are the tools used in the last thirty years to develop and approve antibodies for cancer prevention. Monoclonal antibodies, or “Mabs”, have been the result of medical researchers’ long and laborious hours behind microscopes, hoping to perfect the use of these cancer-fighting cells for doctors all over the world.

What their discoveries have done for cancer patients is tremendous, especially since the number of individuals within the United States diagnosed with some form of cancer continue to rise each year. By using Mabs, doctors and medical practitioners will have one more weapon to use against the silent, yet deadly killer known as cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s (AMC) web site explains that monoclonal antibodies were first developed in laboratories using mice with myeloma cells, which is a kind of bone marrow cancer, and mice that produced specific antibodies for those cells. The combination of these two cells, called a hybridoma cell, forces a perpetual factory making antibodies. The antibodies end up being identical clones of the original hybridoma cell, which is why they are called monoclonal antibodies.

The problem scientists faced with this phenomenal finding was that human antibodies recognized the mouse-produced antibodies as foreign invaders and attacked them. With hard work and dedication, scientists are continuing to develop ways to integrate human antibodies in lieu of mouse antibodies so cancer patients will be able to use the immunotherapy as a form of treatment.

Today there are two types of Mabs, naked and conjugated. The difference between these two lies in the fact that naked antibodies lack radioactive materials attached to them. Conjugated antibodies, on the other hand, are fused with a chemotherapy drug or other toxin used to fight off cancer cells. In recent years the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several Mabs, both naked and conjugated, for cancer treatments.

A list of approved Mabs is available through the ACA’s web site. In 2004 and in 2006, Bevacizumab, a naked antibody, was approved for treating certain types of breast cancers. In 2001 the FDA approved the use of Alemuzumab, a naked antibody, which acts as a form of leukemia prevention by attaching itself to both B and T cancer cells, causing the body’s immune system to attack and kill them. In 2000, the FDA approved the use of a conjugated antibody, Gemtuzumab ozogamicin, which is used in the treatment of chronic leukemia.

Each year cancer claims thousands of victims. Findings from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturer of America show that more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, close to 150,000 men and women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and over 30,000 men will die from prostate cancer this year. Given these numbers, it is not hard to understand why the use and continual research of Mabs is critical to our society.

The recent approval of a vaccine used to protect women from the Human Papilloma Virus, a known link to the development of cervical cancer, demonstrates that research laboratories are on the brink of helping find more antibodies for cancer prevention, providing hope that the number of cancer patients will begin to decline.

Success often outweighs the failures that scientists and pharmaceutical researchers experience when trying to successfully find treatments for cancer and other deadly diseases. The triumphs experienced within the last several decades have come in the form of antibodies for cancer prevention. The Mabs that have received approval by the FDA are now being used in the healing of cancer patients all over the world. As time goes by, these treatments will be further developed and perfected, helping lead the way in cancer protection and treatment for generations to come.

Living With Prostate Cancer

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 27th, 2009 and filed under what is prostate cancer | 9 Comments »

The baby boomer population bubble has now reached 60 years old. This means that many of us are going to need to face illness and diseases that come with surviving six decades. Prostate cancer is one such disease that is expected to grow in number over the next few decades.

Statistically 180,000 new prostate cancer cases are being diagnosed in the United States every year with about 32,000 men dying from this disease annually. Although these are the statistics that are used, the fact is that many of these men will will die and not from the actual prostate cancer, but from allowing the cancerous condition to grow until it is unmanageable. This is due to the fact that prostate cancer can metastasize or move from the prostate area and infect organs, bones and lymph nodes.

This should cause every man to pause and realize that prostate cancer is a serious disease that if given the chance will kill you. It is now the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men in the United States after lung cancer. In Canada about 17,000 males are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and about 4,200 die each year from the disease.

The sad fact is that many of these deaths are avoidable. As with many cancerous diseases, early detection is the key to effective treatment and even cure. Prostate cancer is diagnosed based upon how advanced the malignant tumor has grown. In the early stages, we have maximum flexibility in treatment options and can both manage and in many times cure this potentially deadly disease.

Diagnosis usually start with a medical history as studies have shown that heredity may be a factor with prostate cancer. Next, a DRE or digital rectal exam is done. This is a quick and simple exam where the doctor feels your prostate for any abnormal bumps, size difference or texture. In addition to a DRE, the doctor may suggest a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood Test. This blood test looks for abnormal markers that may indicate the presence of a developing cancerous situation.

There’s growing evidence to suggest that a diet very rich in vitamins and nutrients can also help maintain our body’s ability to ward off many serious diseases. Although the definitely not a cure for prostate cancer, the use of natural remedies to strengthen your body’s immune system can only help to keep you healthy. There’s no question that a low-fat diet along with appropriate vitamins and minerals can help keep you healthier and make you better able to fight off disease.

Several studies have suggested that men who had a diet rich in selenium and vitamin E. had fewer cases of prostate cancer. The kinds of foods that contain selenium include meat, grains, seafood, and some kinds of nuts. It’s critical that you meet with your doctor before making any radical changes to your diet as other problems may arise. There’s also some evidence to suggest that the nutrient lycopene found in tomato based products such as ketchup can provide some protection against contracting prostate cancer.

According to a study in the British Journal of Urology International, men that have been diagnosed with prostate cancer who take supplemental lycopene (is found in very high amounts in tomatoes) and still get their testicles surgically removed are likely to experience less bone pain, less disease and stand more chances of living longer than those who have only had surgical removal of their testicles.

In the end, a partnership with your medical doctor is the best way to remain healthier longer. By taking some responsibility for your health, changes in your lifestyle are much easier to make.

Appropriate Prostate Cancer Treatment in Men Over 80

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 27th, 2009 and filed under what is prostate cancer | No Comments »

I read recently what one doctor said recently that prostate cancer in men over 80 years old should not be a serious issue like in men under 40 years old. This makes sense and given what we know about prostate cancer being a slow-growing malignancy. If you have read about prostate cancer at all, you must be aware that there are certain stages, or levels of seriousness, that are apparent as the disease develops.

People who panic about prostate cancer might be inclined toward aggressive treatment for a man over 80. Aggressive treatment has side effects that may dramatically alter the quality of life of that special senior citizen. Unlike a man under 40, who is much more able to tolerate an aggressive treatment regimen if deemed appropriate.

Some make the mistake and assumed that someone over 80 that has prostate cancer only needs to have the disease managed as the patient probably doesn’t have that many more years, anyway. Although I’m certain some medical doctors think this way, many are more interested in providing a higher quality of life to the elderly.

In the case of a cancerous tumor, the treatment will be based on the desires of the patient, treatment options in the stage at which the cancer has progressed. These are important considerations when determining the appropriate level of treatment, no matter if the man is under 40 are well over 80.

Many men who contract prostate cancer early in life typically have a hereditary factors involved. This means that there may have been men in his close family like his father, brothers or uncles who have had prostate carcinoma. This may suggest to many medical professionals, that the patient needs continued monitoring and potentially aggressive treatment as he has apparently predisposed to this type of malignancy.

A men who has reached the age of 80, has survived what life has thrown his way both medically and physically. A level of frailty becomes a consideration in determining the appropriate level of treatment that should be considered.

Several stages of prostate cancer, offer a treatment option known as” watchful waiting.” As we know, this type of carcinoma is slow-growing, an appropriate level of care may be simply keeping an eye on the cancerous growth to minimize the risk of it metastasizing were spreading to other parts of the body.

So the option of carefully watching may provide the best option for senior men. It allows them to maintain their current quality of life while also protecting their future existence from malignant cancer running through their body. No matter what your age, it’s important to talk to your doctor about treatment options if diagnosed with prostate cancer

Belly Button Patch For Prostate

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 27th, 2009 and filed under prostate symptoms | No Comments »

If you grew up in Japan, your mother would tape an umeboshi plum to your belly button to protect against motion sickness. It works. And in China, drug addiction doctors are experimenting with an herbal belly button medicine for withdrawal symptoms. Now there’s a belly button patch designed for prostate sufferers. Most men past 50 have a sufficient familiary with the acute and chronic aches, pains and urinary issues, to make them take notice when something that might be effective comes along.

The movie The Last Indian, is the true story of a canny old New Zealander, played by Anthony Hopkins, trying to set a landspeed record at the Bonneville flats on his ancient Indian motorbike. Hopkins’ character keeps running to the bathroom - “the old prostate, you know.” Another old Indian he meets along the way, a real live one, gives him a bitter powder to take with him for his prostate. Tastes real bad! he tells him. Apparently it worked, at least in the movie. But then I wondered what he would do when his supply ran out? How would he find the old Indian if there’s a sequel?

Prostatitis and BPH are such ubiquitous disorders. Multiple symptoms and causes, and hundreds of remedies. Non-surgical treatments run the gamut from powerful alpha-bocker drugs, which can cause serious blood pressure problems, to long physical training protocols to release muscle and tendon trigger points. There are also dangerous products out there. Some of them are laced with Tadalifil (the active ingredient in Cialis). The FDA keeps getting them withdrawn, but they come out again under a different name. In case you don’t know, that can be very dangerous for anyone who has heart or diabetes problems, or takes other medications.

Meantime, this new belly button patch looks like a keeper. Easy to use, a tried and tested formula of musk and herbs. That’s right, musk, organic musk, the grandaddy of all aphrodisiacs, found in the most expensive perfumes. Using the same principle as with the umeboshi plum and the Chinese treatment for withdrawal symptoms. The musk and herbs are drawn across the skin by body heat. Then they follow the energy channels to exactly where they’re needed. You body always know what it needs.

There are no pills to take and no procedures to undergo. This formula opens the energy channels that lead to the prostate, the sexual organs and the rest of the pelvis and also energizes and balances the whole system. The prostate pain and pressure gets relieved, the urine flow gets stronger and you can sleep through the night. Does it help sex? You bet and in a most interesting way. The feeling is subtle, a natural sense of energy and power in reserve with sronger erections and fuller orgasms.

What could be simpler than sticking on a patch and just letting the energy flow. The umeboshi plum balances out the vestibular system for motion sickness. The Prostaderm belly button patch heals and balances out the sexual system. A whole new and wonderfully holistic approach.

Find a Cancer Cure in the Cupboard

Posted by Yuri Urkel on October 27th, 2009 and filed under prostate cancer treatments | No Comments »

Finding a cancer cure in the cupboard is not as outlandish as you might think. Stunning developments in science are pointing towards foods and natural molecules that attack tumors and inhibit cancer cell growth in a number of ways. Further research will hopefully pave the way for a nationally recognized preventive cancer diet.

Patients can look into the existing research to determine whether or not to incorporate several anti-cancer foods into their diet. It’s a good idea for healthy people to consume these foods regularly. They could prevent cancer from occurring unexpectedly.

Many of the foods aren’t particularly unusual and can be picked up at any health food store. Let’s take a look at some of the research. Remember, this is just a summary. You may wish to delve into it more. The author concedes there are many foods not herein covered. Let’s take a look at some potent anti-cancer foods, and you’ll get one step closer to crafting a cancer treatments diet.

Be sure to always check any new medical information with a licensed medical professional before attempting any dietary changes. It’s best to see a doctor for information about cancer treatments, however, the diet part can begin at home anytime.

The cruciferous vegetables of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale contain substances like glucosinolates, crambene, indole-3-carbinol (I-3-C) and isothiocyanates. Cruciferous vegetables appear to regulate a network of enzymes in the body that regulate certain types of cancer.

For example, looking at just one component, indole-3-carbinol, we see a number of healing properties. Studies show that I-3-C inhibits proliferation of human breast cancer cells, reduces the activity of tumor-promoting enzymes, and accelerated apoptosis in some cancer cell lines. Apoptosis is the technical term for programmed cell death. It appears to work by stimulating the enzymes the body uses for breakdown and detoxification of chemicals and carcinogens. What seems like an anecdote of funny folklore from a Roman statesman, Cato the Elder (234-149 BC), may have slight merit. He says, “If a cancerous ulcer appears upon the breasts, apply a crushed cabbage leaf and it will make it well.”

Besides the in vitro laboratory studies and studies of animal populations, there are large scale epidemiological studies that conclusively point to a link between consumption, or lack thereof, or cruciferious vegetables and certain cancers. Studies associate diets high in cruciferous vegetables with lower risk for lung, stomach and colorectal cancers.

When observing lots of people over time, scientists ascertained that diets high in cruciferous vegetables were linked with dramatically lower rates of prostate and bladder cancer. It’s important to take supplements to get the right amounts of the good molecules. For example, the Department of Agriculture analyzed 71 broccoli plants and discovered a 30 fold difference in the amount of Glucoraphanin. Sulforaphane is a product of Glucoraphanin, and Sulforaphane has been shown to stimulate enzymes that deactivate carcinogens and inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals.

The author’s recommendation is to make a smoothie with all the cruciferous vegetables a couple of times per week. Throw in a couple apples, oranges, or 1/2 cup of blueberries to sweeten. Add about a 1/2 cup water and use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix TurboBlend 4500. Vegetables in the cruciferous family also have the antioxidants, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, and they’re thought to decrease prostate cancer.

Some other foods that have anti-cancer substances are noteworthy, and you may want to include them in a smoothie or two daily. Dandelion, turnip greens, carrots, collards, canteloupe, sweet potatoes, and apricots have the highest levels of beta-carotene. Beta-carotene has been shown to reduce lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast cancer.

Flax, a great source of fiber, should be consumed daily to facilitate healthy bowel movements and decrease the risk of cancerous changes. Simply grind up a tablespoon in a coffee grinder and drink with juice in the morning. Flax has lignans that block and suppress cancerous changes. The Budwig Diet extensively focuses on flax seed oil and cottage cheese, the elimination of some foods, and other dietary changes to stifle cancer.

Chili peppers, garlic, sea vegetables, rosemary, licorice root, grapefruits, figs, dark leafy greens and many other plant foods have anti-cancer qualities.

Of course, foods are just one of the many, many options to pursue when seeking to prevent cancer. A cancer treatments diet is ideal for almost anyone looking to lessen the likelihood of cancer onset. Most foods are safe unless you have some rare condition, allergy, or unusual contraindication.
