Prostate cancer is a disease in which cells in the prostate gland become abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors.
Prostate cancer is a malignancy of one of the major male sex glands. Along with the testicles and the seminal vesicles, the prostate secretes the fluid that makes up semen. The prostate is about the size of a walnut and lies just behind the urinary bladder. A tumor in the prostate interferes with proper control of the bladder and normal sexual functioning. Often the first symptom of prostate cancer is difficulty in urinating. However, because a very common, non-cancerous condition of the prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also causes the same problem, difficulty in urination is not necessarily due to cancer.
The precise cause of prostate cancer is not known. However, there are several known risk factors for disease including age over 55, African-American heritage, a family history of the disease, occupational exposure to cadmium or rubber, and a high-fat diet. Men with high plasma testosterone levels may also have an increased risk for developing prostate cancer.
Frequently, prostate cancer has no symptoms and the disease is diagnosed when the patient goes for a routine screening examination. However, when the tumor is big or the cancer has spread to the nearby tissues, the following symptoms may be seen:
-weak or interrupted flow of the urine
-frequent urination (especially at night)
-difficulty starting urination
-inability to urinate
-pain or burning sensation when urinating
-blood in the urine
-persistent pain in lower back, hips, or thighs (bone pain)
-painful ejaculation-

My Dad has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and the doctor gave him 2 options, normal open surgery or robotic surgery. Can anyone tell me which of these is better and why?
Also, he is keen not to have any surgery at all and would prefer to have radiation, the doctor said in a man of his age (55) that radiation might cause problems down the track (he did not specify) and he would not recommend it. Is there anyone who has had radiation treatment for this who would disagree?
He has caught it quite early and it is only in half of his prostate.
There is no treatment that has a clear advantage in overall survival when it comes to prostate cancer. Many men choose to not teat it at all for the first few years, as it is usually slow growing and can be managed for long periods of time. However, in someone as young as your dad it should be treated for cure.
If he is going the surgery route I would definitely go robotic. It is more precise, less invasive, has a faster recovery and there is less risk of side effects. To get the biggest advantage from this surgery you wan to make sure the surgeon has several under his belt as this is still fairly new in some areas of the country and it does take some getting used to.
There are several types of radiation. At a minimum I want IMRT. Someone else mentioned Proton Therapy, which many men swear by. It is available at Loma Linda here in southern California. There is also Cyber Knife that was invented at Stanford several years ago. However it is still not available everywhere, but we do have it at several hospitals in southern California.
At the very least he should get a second opinion and it should be from a teaching facility. These hospitals are nearly always designated cancer hospitals, they see the most unusual cases, are involved in research and have the best equipment. Some of the treatment I mentioned requires very expensive equipment, which is often out of reach for many community hospitals. Best wishes to you and your dad.
I have many of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
Such that I am always making sure I know where the nearest bathroom
is. It is really inconvenient and makes me feel somewhat down.
I am a 47 year old male (younger than one would expect for such urinary problems).
My Dr has ruled out prostate (only slightly enlarged) and prostate cancer.
I have tried some prostate medication anyway and it had no affect.
I have tried a herbal tea that supposedly helps but it hasn’t yet (only two days so far).
Does anyone know of any other causes of OAB symptoms like this ?
Simple urinary tract infection can simulate prostatitis. See a urologist, have an evaluation, and have this treated. Most men do have urinary symptoms at some time in their lives, though certainly not as commonly as women do.
Many time, a general practitioner does not detect root cause of urinary tract issues. (My own prejudice and observation here.)
